My first visit to Lyon was in July of 2014 and I was smitten. On this visit, I spent six weeks in late autumn (November, December) and it captured my heart. Lyon feels a bit like Paris but smaller and friendlier. Originally the Roman city of Lugdunum, it was prized for its strategic location and the Roman amphitheater which dates back to 15 B.C. Vieux Lyon (district of Old Lyon) is a look into the Renaissance period and a wonderful place to explore. The marvelous views from the hills of Fourvière and Croix-Rousse are worth a visit. In Lyon, I always felt I was discovering something old and something new. Although the weather was turning colder, the days were mostly sunny and warm. This enticed me to wander about discovering plazas, sculptures, parks and walks along the Rhône and Saône rivers to the confluence where they meet. My time here was special for many reasons and I hope to return often.

La Fête des Lumières was canceled in Lyon this year due to the terrorist attacks in Paris in November. It’s an annual event which typically spans several days but was held for only one night (8 Decembre) to honor the victims.
